Manpreet claimed India’s third-ever women’s shot put medal at Asian Games
India’s Manpreet Kaur clinched a bronze medal in the women’s shot put event at the Asian Games 2026 on Friday, September 25.
The 36-year-old Indian athlete finished third in the women’s shot put final at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium with a best throw of 17.17m in her fourth attempt.
The gold medal was clinched by China’s Jiayuan Song, who recorded 19.40m in her second attempt. Her compatriot, Linru Zhang, claimed the silver medal with a best throw of 18.14m, securing a double podium finish for China.
It was a historic result for Chinese athletes, with Song winning a second consecutive women’s shot put medal, following her silver at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.

Manpreet had a solid outing at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, opening with a 16.32m throw. She then improved to 16.41m and 16.80m in her next two throws.
The Indian athlete then crossed the 17m mark for the first time in the final with a 17.17m throw on her fourth attempt, sealing her place on the podium. Manpreet ended her campaign with a 16.75m throw on her fifth attempt before a foul throw on her final attempt.
This was a historic result for Manpreet, who had earlier claimed a bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships with a best throw of 17m. She had also competed at the Hangzhou 2022 Games but finished in fifth place with 16.25m.
The Ambala native also took part in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, finishing fourth with 17.49m. The veteran athlete has now clinched her maiden Asian Games medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

This was also only the third women’s shot put medal at the Asian Games for India. Barbara Webster won India’s first medal in the event at the 1951 New Delhi Games, while Kiran Baliyan took bronze at the Hangzhou Games.
