The men’s javelin throw competition is scheduled to begin from 9:45 PM IST.
Reigning Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra is set to compete in the men’s javelin throw competition at the Paavo Nurmi Games 2024 athletic meet in Turku, Finland on Tuesday (June 18). The 26-year-old Indian athlete had withdrawn from last month’s Ostrava Golden Spike as a precautionary measure because of an issue in his adductor muscle. This will be Chopra’s third outing in the Olympic year after the Doha Diamond League and the Federation Cup.
Neeraj Chopra prepares for Paris Olympics
Chopra began the season with a second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League in May courtesy of an 88.36m throw. After that, he went on to clinch the gold medal at the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar with an underwhelming effort of 82.27m.
The Indian would need to be at his best on Tuesday as he will be up against the likes of Anderson Peters, Max Dehning and Keshorn Walcott among others. Dehning, 19, is the latest entrant in the 90m-club with a throw of 90.20m at the German Winter Throwing Championships in Halle.
Local favourite Olivier Helander, who had beaten Chopra in the 2022 edition of the one-day competition with an impressive throw of 89.83m will also be there. The 27-year-old recently won the bronze medal at the European Athletic Championships in Rome. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Granada, who holds a personal best of 93.07 and 2012 Olympic champion Walcott are also in the fray.

Chopra won a silver medal in 2022 in Turku with a throw of 89.30m, which was his personal best at that time. The Indian improved that mark to 89.94 at the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League in the same year and it has been his best effort till date.
Meanwhile, Jakub Vadlejch, who beat the 26-year-old in the Doha Diamond League earlier this year, will not be competing here. After the Paavo Nurmi Games, the Asian Games champion will be seen in action at the Paris Diamond League on July 27.
