Neeraj Chopra has finished in top two since 2021.
Neeraj Chopra made a bold return to the Paris Diamond League on Friday night (19 June), clinching victory with a powerful first-round throw of 88.16 meters. It was the Indian javelin star’s first appearance at the Paris meet since 2023, having skipped last year’s edition to prepare for the Olympics.
His very first throw proved decisive when the 27-year-old launched the spear beyond the 88-meter mark, taking a lead that no one else in the field could surpass for the rest of the event.
Julian Weber of Germany, who happens to be Chopra’s main rival this season, came closest with an 87.88m opener, followed by an 86.20m in the second round.
Brazil’s Mauricio Luiz da Silva shocked many by recording a lifetime best of 86.62 m in his third attempt to finish third.
Chopra’s full series: 88.16m, 85.10m, foul, foul, foul, 82.69m.

Weber, who beat Chopra at the Doha Diamond League in May with a last-throw 91.06m, couldn’t repeat that finish this time.
Though he threw over 84 meters three times, none were enough to challenge Chopra’s mark. Da Silva, on the other hand, delivered Brazil’s best-ever performance in a Diamond League men’s javelin final.
The rest of the field failed to mount serious competition, with former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago) peaking at 81.66 m. Two-time world champ Anderson Peters (Grenada) reached 80.29m, and Kenyan veteran Julius Yego managed 80.26 m.
Moldova’s Andrian Mardare and France’s Remi Rougetet also struggled, with Mardare’s best being 76.66 m. Rougetet had no valid mark.

The meet record of 91.40m, set by Jan Zelezny, Chopra’s coach in 1993 still stands. Chopra’s win in Paris also extends his streak of top-two finishes to 26 competitions since June 2021, a span that includes Olympic gold, World Championship silver, and multiple Diamond League podiums.
