Badminton Asia Championships 2023: Sindhu, Prannoy, Gayatri-Treesa, Satwik-Chirag advance, Lakshya Sen bows out
Sen crashed out after straight games defeat to former world champion Loh Kean Yew in straight games in Dubai.
PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth advanced, but it was curtains for Lakshya Sen in the opening round of the Badminton Asia Championships 2023. Also progressing to the round of 16 were the doubles pairs Satwiksairaj Rankiredy/Chirag Shetty and Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand.
Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy started the day positively for India winning against the higher-ranked (WR 35) Malaysian pair Chan Peng Soon/Cheah Yee See in straight games.
In the women’s singles, PV Sindhu put up a spirited performance against Wen Chi Hsu and started from where she left off at the Madrid Masters. She is the lone Indian to progress with Aakarshi Kashyap and Malvika Bansod losing in the opening rounds. Malvika Bansod was the standout performer (although she lost) and showed great fight against WR 1 Akane Yamaguchi (23-25, 19-21).
Lakshya Sen’s poor woes continued as he lost in the opening round to WR 7 Singaporean Loh Kean Yew in straight games (7-21,21-13). Sen came back strongly in the second game, but Loh stood firm and dictated the match throughout.
HS Prannoy made a good comeback (after a month’s break) and won the opening round against Niang Phone (21-14, 21-9). Kidambi Srikanth, after crossing the opening hurdle, will take on fourth seed Naraoka in the pre-quarterfinals.
Tournament’s top seed Jonathan Christie withdrew from the opening round at the start of the day and defending champion Lee Zii Jia too made an early exit after losing to Angus Ka Long.
The tournament has started off with many upsets in the opening two days. Seeds 3,5,6,7 in the mixed doubles exited in the opening round yesterday.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty ended the day well from India’s perspective by defeating Tan Kian Meng and Tan Wee Kiong in straight games.
