Which nations have won Sudirman Cup trophy?
China holds the record for winning the most number of titles (13).
A biannual international badminton competition amongst national teams (mixed) is known as the Sudirman Cup. The competition, which debuted in 1989 is an international badminton competition held every two years between mixed national teams. Each Sudirman Cup tie contains five matches, including men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles.
The competitors compete for national pride, BWF World Ranking points, and national reputation; there is no cash reward. China has won the Sudirman Cup a record 12 times, making it the most successful country in the competition's history.
China - 13 titles
Since the tournament's inception in 1989, China has been a dominant force in badminton, and they have continued to prove their prowess in this tournament. In 1995, China won the championship, beating Indonesia in the final. They repeated their success in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023. Their dominance in the championship is evident, having won more than half of the championships played so far.
South Korea - 4 titles
South Korea's first victory came in 1991 when they defeated Indonesia in the final. The team was led by Park Joo-bong, who was one of the most successful badminton players of his generation. South Korea's victory in 1991 was particularly significant as it marked the first time that a non-Indonesia team had won the tournament.
The Asian side won their second title in the following edition in 1993, defeating Indonesia once again in the final. This time, the team was led by the legendary player Kim Moon-soo, who had won multiple titles at the World Championships and the All England Open.
They had to wait for a decade for their next Sudirman Cup title, which came in 2003. The team was led by one of the most successful male pairs of their time, Lee Dong-soo and Yoo Yong-sung. South Korea beat Denmark in the final to win their third Sudirman Cup title.
South Korea's last Sudirman Cup trophy came in 2017 when they defeated China in the final. The team was led by Son Wan-ho, who was the No. 1 player in the world at that time. South Korea's victory in 2017 was particularly impressive when they defeated China, who had won six titles in a row and a record haul of 10 titles to their name.
Indonesia - 1 title
Indonesia has a rich history of badminton and the Sudirman Cup is one of the most prestigious international badminton tournaments. Despite not winning the tournament since 1989, Indonesia remains one of the top badminton nations in the world with only one Sudirman Cup and continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the Sudirman Cup and other international tournaments.
