Indonesia Open 2023: PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, Satwik/Chirag progress to pre-quarterfinals
Treesa-Gayatri and Arjun/Kapila faced defeats.
India's PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, and Satwik/Chirag all emerged victorious on the opening day of the Indonesia Open 2023 (BWF 1000). After two back-to-back defeats at the Thailand and Singapore Open, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu got back to her best by defeating home favourite Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in straight games.
Like Sindhu, Malaysia Masters champion HS Prannoy won his opening round match against higher-ranked Japanese Kenta Nishimoto, also in straight games.
Badminton Asia Championships gold medallists, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty got the better of the Popov brothers after Christo Popov suffered an injury forcing a retirement. Earlier in the day Christo took on Chou Tien Chen in the men's singles and during the match suffered an injury that might have aggregated in the men's doubles match against the Indians.
Women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost in the opening round to Japanese pair Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi. The Indian pair had their chances throughout the match but couldn't capitalize on them. They had a four-point lead in the final game but lost momentum thereby losing the crucial lead and the match to a lower-ranked pair.
MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila were up against eighth-seed Malaysian pair Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi. After an excellent start in the opening game, India's number two men's doubles specialists lost in the second game, winning just six points. However, they made a good comeback in the deciding game (from 16-19 to 19-19) and also saved a match point. In the end, the Malaysian pair, using their experience, came out victorious and progressed to the pre-quarterfinals.
