Singapore Open: Full list of winners
Only three Indians have won the title to date.
Singapore Open is currently one of the six BWF World Tour Super 750 Tournaments in the circuit. It has been held annually since 1929 and in 1956 it was converted into a national championship. In the following year, the tournament was made an open-invitation tournament and was held annually till 1973. In 1990, the tournament entered the International Badminton arena and was called the Federation Grand Prix Circuit. From 2018 to 2022 it was designated as one of the seven Super 500 tournaments in the BWF World Tour and in 2023 was upgraded to the BWF Super 750 tournament.
Only three Indians have won the Singapore Open to date; Saina Nehwal in 2010, B. Sai Praneeth in 2017 and P.V Sindhu in 2022. Saina, 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, defeated Lu Lan and Li Xuerui in the semi-finals and quarter-finals respectively. The top seed then defeated Tai Tzu Ying in straight games 21-18,21-15 to clinch the WS title.
B. Sai Praneeth who was unseeded back in 2017 defeated compatriot Kidambi Srikanth in three games (17-21, 21-17, 21-12) to claim the MS title. He became the second Indian and first men’s singles player to win the Singapore Open title. PV Sindhu (3rd seed) defeated Wang Zhiyi (21-9,11-21,21-15) to clinch the WS title and became the latest entrant to lift the title in 2022.
Women’s doubles pair of Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei were the last to lift the title from the host nation in 2010. Since then, none of the Singaporean players have won the title. This time the hopes will be on men’s singles player and WR 4 Loh Kean Yew who would look to shine in the home tournament. However, he is not in great form having reached the quarter-finals only twice with two first-round exits in 2023.
