Sankar Muthusamy attains career-best ranking, PV Sindhu drops out of top 15
HS Prannoy remains the only singles Indian player inside the top 10.
India's young sensation Sankar Muthusamy has jumped nine spots to world rank 71 - his career best in the men's singles. The World Junior Championships 2022 silver medalist had a good run last week at the US Open 2023 defeating WR-32 Nhat Nyugen and WR-35 Zilberman to qualify for the quarter-finals. The youngster in the end lost to compatriot Lakshya Sen in straight game but took home valuable ranking points helping him attain WR-71.
On the other hand, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu dropped five spots to WR-17. She lost to longtime rival Gao Fang Jie in the quarter-finals last week but had a good outing at the Canada Open two weeks prior. Sindhu, 28, slipped out of the top 10 for the first time in March earlier this year, first time since November 2016.
After a good outing at the Canada Open 2023, she rose to the 12th spot but couldn't maintain her ranking slipping out of top 15. She has been battling with poor form since her comeback from long injury layoff post the Commonwealth Games gold medal winning run. A few good performances at the Korea Open and Japan Open in the next two weeks should see Sindhu rise above.
Among the other Indians in the fray, HS Prannoy dropped a placed to WR-10. He has been out of action for the past three weeks and is set to make a return in this week's Korea Open. Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth continue to hold on their previous week's ranking of WR-12 and WR-20 respectively.
In the doubles section, Asian Champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty maintain to hold on to their career-best third spot with second ranked doubles pair MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila dropping a spot to WR-27.
Young women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have dropped a spot and are placed in the 19th spot. The pair hasn't played many tournaments this year and will be returning to the BWF Tour this week post a long break.
