US Open 2023: PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, Sankar Muthusamy enter quarter-finals
Sen and Sankar will meet in the quarters in an all-India clash.
All three Indians in the fray in round of 16 qualified for the quarter-finals of US Open 2023. India's top seeds in women's and men's singles, PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen, defeated Sung Shuo Yun and Jan Louda respectively in straight games and continued their fine run in the American leg of the BWF World Tour. Young Sankar Muthusamy defeated another top 40 singles player - Misha Zilberman (21-18, 21-23, 21-13) in the US Open and in the process reached his maiden quarter-finals at a BWF 300 tournament.
World Junior championships silver medallist, Sankar, 19, continued from where he left behind yesterday after defeating WR-32 Nhat Nyugen. Unlike the previous encounter, Misha from Israel gave Sankar a tough fight with the match lasting for three games and 74 minutes.
Next up, the youngster face the in-form and last week's Canada Open winner Lakshya Sen in an all-Indian clash for a place in the semi-finals. This will also be their first meeting in the BWF circuit.
On the other hand, experienced shuttlers, PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen did not face much hurdles and raced through to the quarter-finals with ease. After winning the opening game, Sen was given a good fight by Jan Louda of Czech Republic but in the end with experience, Lakshya came out all guns blazing.
PV Sindhu breezed past Chinese Taipei's Sung Shuo Yun in straight games (21-14, 21-12). This is also the first time this season, she has made back-to-back quarter-finals appearances in the BWF tour.
The two-time Olympic medallist will have a rematch against Gao Fang Jie. Sindhu emerged victorious last week in the quarter-finals of Canada Open and will to carry forward the momentum.
