Young Priyanshu Rajawat also advanced after a hard-fought win.

India’s top ranked singles players HS Prannoy and PV Sindhu progressed through to the quarter-finals of Australian Open 2023. Youngster Priyanshu Rajawat also put in a spirited effort to beat WR-28 Wang Tzu Wei, and this is his first quarter-finals appearance since conquering the Orleans Masters title back in April this year.

Kidambi Srikanth started the proceedings by getting the better of Su Li Yang in straight games. The former WR-1 looked calm and composed throughout the match and finished the encounter without much fuss. WR-10 HS Prannoy had to battle out three games and eventually registered a win over Chi Yu Jen (19-21, 21-19, 21-13).

25-year-old Mithun Manjunath, who defeated former World Champion Loh Kean Yew in the opening round put his heart out against Malaysia’s number one Lee Zii Jia but couldn’t hold on, losing in three games. Mithun in the past has found it hard to finish games and had conceded seven match points against Log Kean Yew but somehow managed to finish the match with a favourable result.

Later in the day, the only remaining Indian doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly lost a close battle in two games to Mayu Matsumoto/Wakana Nagahara (10-21, 20-22). The WR-20 had three game points in round 2 (20-17) to force a decider but failed to finish resulting in a 20-22 loss in the second game and the match.
