China Open 2023: Satwik-Chirag's first round loss ends India's campaign
None of the Indian shuttlers registered a win in the competition
India's campaign came to an end in the second day of China Open 2023. The last remaining shuttlers in fray for India Satwiksiraj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost in the opening round of the men's doubles encounter to Indonesia's 13th seed in three games (17-21, 21-11, 17-21). Earlier in the day, mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy too suffered exit exit after losing to Malaysia's Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei in straight games (15-21, 16-21).
Asian champions lost the opening game (17-21), however completely dominated the following game by winning (21-11). The Indians had a healthy lead of (11-2) at the mid-game interval and fast forward had nine game points with the Indonesian's winning one point. The final set started in the 13th seed's favour who marched forward with a (7-2) advantage but the WR-2 rose back quickly to reduce the deficit to one point (6-7).
The game from here on was entirely dominated by Bagas and Fikri who had a huge six match points on offer. Satwik-Chirag tried crawling back to save three match points from (14-20) to (17-20) but wasn't sufficient to progress into the pre-quarterfinals.
In the mixed doubles section it was Sikki Reddy and Rohan Kapoor who started India's proceedings on day 2. The pair after putting up a tough fight lost in three games. With majority of the Indian players giving Hong Kong Open a miss next week, the shuttlers will be back in action at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
