Badminton governing body increases prize money for BWF World Tour Finals

The prize money for this year will be US 2.5 million and rise to $3.5 million in 2026.

In a monumental move, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) has solidified its commitment to elevating the sport by injecting a staggering US$11.5 million into the prize money pool for the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals over the next four years.

BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund hailed this injection as a significant boost for the entire badminton community, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to creating a world-class sports product. The prize money trajectory is set to soar by starting at US$2.5 million in 2023 and reaching an impressive US$3.5 million by 2026.

2026: US$ 3.5 million

Hangzhou is poised to become the new home for the season-ending finals, creating an exciting prospect for badminton enthusiasts worldwide. Lund expressed enthusiasm about witnessing the world’s top stars compete for ultimate glory in this grand setting.

The Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium is set to host the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2023, scheduled from December 13 to 17. The confirmation of the Top 8 qualifiers from the HSBC Race To Finals rankings will be made following the conclusion of the China Masters 2023.

Parallelly, the BWF has announced the allocation of World Ranking points for the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals, BWF World Championships and Olympic Games has seen an increase further underlining the BWF’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellence in the sport.

Earlier this year, the BWF also announced an expansion of the World Tour from 2023 to 2026 with 31 events on the calendar including the highly anticipated BWF World Tour Finals.

The Malaysia Open is set to join the ranks of the prestigious Super 1000 tournaments alongside the All England Open, China Open, and Indonesia Open. The India Open and Singapore Open have been elevated to the Super 750 category, reflecting the sport’s global growth.

BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund emphasized the positive impact of this expansion on badminton’s global status by citing the sport’s surging popularity and participation numbers. Lund stated that the increase in tournaments provides a fantastic opportunity to enhance the sport’s reach not only in established territories but also in new regions.

This expansion, driven by a plethora of high-quality bids, promises a tour that will be bigger, better and more captivating over the next four years, fostering increased prize money, broader television and online coverage and a spectacular presentation that contributes to an enhanced world-class sports product.
