South Korea will be represented by two women’s singles shuttlers.
South Korea’s Kim Ga Eun has replaced former world no.1 Akane Yamaguchi in women’s singles for the upcoming BWF World Tour Finals 2023. Yamaguchi is currently recovering from an injury and needs an extended break to get back to her best. This is a golden opportunity for Kim Ga Eun who initially finished 11th by accumulating 70,650 points in the qualification cycle of the BWF World Tour Finals.
She missed out on qualifying at the first instance to USA’s Beiwan Zhang who was 8000 point ahead of her – 78,230.
Kim Ga Eun had a good season having achieved a career-best position of WR-13 in BWF World Rankings. She defeated quality opponents like He Bing Jiao, Han Yue and Wang Zhiyi who all are ranked inside the top 10 bracket. Her major triumph this season was clinching the title at Korea Masters in front of her home fans. Furthermore, she finished runners-up in Australian Open and semifinals at the prestigious China Masters – BWF 750.
She finished the BWF Tour on a positive note defeating notable youngsters Aya Ohori and Thuy Linh Nguyen enroute to her semifinals finish at China Masters. With this, South Korea will be represented by two players – An Se Young – in the women’s singles category at the season-ending competition. An Se Young qualified for the competition by winning World Championships.
She has been out of action post the Asian Games 2023 due to an injury and will look to make a comeback in the prestigious event.
