Dubai Para Badminton International 2023: Manasi-Thulasimathi wins doubles gold, India return with 14 medals

The 5th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2023 was held from December 11 to December 17. The event was marked by stellar performances, with India making a significant impact. Indian contingent ended the Dubai-based tournament with 14 medals, which comprised one gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals. Most of the para athletes landed with medals in one or more categories.
Manasi Joshi and Thulasimathi Murugesan, the dynamic duo from India, were the linchpins of India’s remarkable performance. Holding the second rank, they showcased extraordinary prowess and tactical acumen against the Indonesian team of Leani Ratri Oktila and Khalimatus Sadiyah. Their triumphant victory in the women’s doubles SL3-SU5 category was marked by a scoreline of 15-21, 21-14, 21-6, securing them the coveted gold medal.
Tokyo Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat, also a Asian Para Games gold medallist, put up a valiant fight in the SL-3 final. Despite going down 17-21, 18-21 to England’s Daniel Bethell, Bhagat’s performance was commendable, earning him a silver medal.

In the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 category, Bhagat teamed up with Manisha Ramdass. They faced a tough challenge from Indonesia’s Hikmat Ramdani and Leani Ratri Oktila, finishing with a score of 14-21, 11-21 in the final.
Team India also made its mark in the mixed doubles SL3 and SU5 category, with Kumar Nitesh and Thulasimathi Murugesan securing a bronze medal. In the men’s SL-4 category, Suhas Yathiraj clinched silver, while Sukant Kadam and Tarun won bronze medals. Palak Kohli added to India’s medal tally by bagging a bronze in the women’s singles SL-4 category.
The men’s doubles SL 3- SL4 category saw Manoj Sarkar and his Korean partner Cho Nadan secure silver, while the pair of Kumar Nitesh and Tarun added another bronze to India’s tally. Palak Kohli also chipped in with one more bronze medal in women’s doubles partnering Tugce Celik in SL3-SU5.
