India defeated Thailand 3-2 in the finals
The Indian women’s badminton team created history on Sunday as they won their maiden gold medal at the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024 in Shah Alam, Malaysia. The team, led by two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, defeated Thailand 3-2 in a thrilling final that went down to the wire.
With a convincing win over World No. 17 Supanida Katehong 21-12, 21-12, PV Sindhu gave India a perfect start. The two-time Olympic medallist used her powerful smashes and calm retrievals to overcome the rival she had trouble with before.
The young pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand faced a tough challenge from Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai, who matched their speed and intensity. The rallies were close, and maybe nerve-wracking for the fans of either team, but the outcome of this match could not have been more thrilling.
The Indians were aggressive, with Treesa dominating the net. Even after losing the second game, the World No.23 pair held their ground, beating the Thai pair 21-16, 16-21, 21-16 to increase India’s lead.
Thailand fought back in the final after Ashmita Chaliha failed to impress in her match and the young doubles pair of Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam, who stepped in for the injured Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto, could not handle the pressure in the high-stakes contest.
