Danish athletes have dominated the German Open since the beginning.
The German Open, a renowned annual badminton tournament, has a rich history that dates back to 1955. It was during this year, in the former capital of Germany, Bonn, that the first International German Badminton Championships were organized, coming just two years after the foundation of the German Badminton Association (DBV).
Since its inception, the German Open has been the most important tournament for the DBV, held annually with only three exceptions – in 1970, 1979, and 1998. The championships were hosted in Bonn until 1962. However, in a move to broaden the reach of the sport and engage with a wider audience, the tournament has been held in various cities across Germany since 1963.
In terms of past performance, Denmark holds the most impressive record in the competition’s history, having 90 titles that include:
- 20 men’s singles
- 10 women’s singles
- 23 men’s doubles
- 13 women’s doubles
- 24 mixed doubles
China and England follow as the second and third most successful nations, with 58 and 37 titles respectively. Germany as the host country holds the ninth position and won nine titles, including:
- 2 in women’s singles
- 1 in men’s doubles
- 3 in women’s doubles
- 3 in mixed doubles
