All England Open 2024: Satwik-Chirag, Lakshya Sen win; Priyanshu Rajawat bows out

The second day of All England Open 2024 was a display of top-notch badminton, with India’s leading players making impressive progress.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, after their success at the French Open, won against the strong Indonesian pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan with scores of 21-18, 21-14. Now, they’re preparing to play against Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana, aiming to win India’s first men’s doubles title at this event.
Lakshya Sen, who recently made it to the semifinals at the French Open, beat Denmark’s Magnus Johannesen 21-14, 21-14. He’s up next against another top Danish player, Anders Antonsen, who’s ranked third in the world.
Not every Indian player could move forward in the tournament. Priyanshu Rajawat lost a close match to Indonesia’s Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo with the final scores being 21-19, 11-21, 21-9.
In women’s doubles, Tanisha Castro and Ashwini Ponnappa won against Hong Kong’s Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam, and will next face China’s Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu. However, Rutaparna and Swetaparna, were defeated early by Japan’s Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi.

In women’s singles, the world’s number one An Se Young beat Hsu Wen-chi, setting up a much-awaited match with India’s PV Sindhu, who moved forward after her opponent, Germany’s Yvonne Li, had to retire mid-match. This upcoming match is expected to be exciting, as Sindhu tries to beat the top-ranked Korean player for the first time.
