Lakshya Sen won the last match against Lee Zii Jia in a thrilling encounter.

Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen narrowly missed out on an Olympic bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Games on Monday, August 5. In a closely contested match, Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia emerged victorious with a final score of 21-13, 19-21, 11-21.

Sen started strong, winning the first game convincingly. However, Lee mounted a comeback, taking the second game in a tight finish and dominating the decisive third game. This result marks another fourth-place finish for India at the Paris Olympics, continuing a string of near-misses for medals in various events

#5 All England Open 2022 SF: Lakshya Sen beat Lee Zii Jia (21-13, 12-21, 21-19)

Lakshya Sen registered his second win over Lee Zii Jia in the semifinals of the All England Open and also became the first Indian men’s singles player to reach the semi-final of All England Open after Pullela Gopichand in 2001.

He started the match well and took a four-point lead at 10-6. However, Zii Jia also was playing well and reduced the gap to one point at 12-13. Sen then won six consecutive points to take the opening game 21-13.

The second game saw the Malaysia shuttler dominating as he quickly wrapped the game and forced a decider. The third game was neck to neck with Lee Zii Jia having an advantage for most part of the game. However, Sen made a good comeback from 12-16 down to win the match 21-19.

#4 Thomas Cup 2022 QF: Lakshya Sen lost to Lee Zii Jia (21-23, 9-21)

Lakshya Sen lost his first match to Lee Zii Jia at the Thomas Cup 2022 when he was struggling with his form. The first game was a neck-to-neck affair and Sen managed to get two game point opportunities at 20-18 but couldn’t convert and Lee Zii Jia equalised. Lakshya then saved a match point, but Lee took the game.

The Indian shuttler was no match for his Malaysian opponent in the second game and lost the second game tamely 9-21.

#3 Indonesia Open 2023 Round of 32: Lakshya Sen beat Lee Zii Jia (21-17, 21-13) in the

Lakshya and Lee Zii Jia both were struggling with their form in 2023 and already had several first-round exits. However, in the BWF 1000 Indonesia Open it was Lakshya who prevailed. He trailed for the majority of the first game but after one stage won eight of nine points to go from 13-16 down to take the opening game 21-17. Lakshya started the second game on a positive note and wrapped the match in straight games quite comfortably.

#2 All England Open 2024 QF: Lakshya Sen beat Lee Zii Jia (20-22, 21-16, 21-19)

They have only faced once this year and Lakshya Sen emerged victorious as he beat Lee Zii Jia in a thrilling encounter. Lakshya started the proceedings well and was 12-7 up, but Lee took the next five points to level the game. The Malaysian only went strength to strength from there and won the opening game, despite Sen saving three game points.

The second game was also quite neck-to-neck. However, from being 14-16 down, Sen won the seven points to close the game and forced a decider. In the third game, Lakshya led from the start and increased the gap to four points at 19-15 but Lee Zii Jia soon equalised at 19-19. However, Sen didn’t lose his calm this time and won the next two points to win the match.

Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen’s quest for an Olympic medal came to an end on Monday as he lost to Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal playoff at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The match ended with a score of 21-13, 16-21, 11-21 in Lee’s favor.

Sen, who was aiming to become the first Indian male badminton player to secure an Olympic medal, had previously faced defeat in the semifinals on Sunday. The 22-year-old from Almora fell to reigning champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in straight games, 20-22, 14-21.
