India will field their joint-best contingent in badminton matching the Rio Olympic tally of seven players.

On Wednesday, India’s no 1 women’s doubles pair, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa mathematically qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024. The pair, who came together last year ensured their qualification through their consistent performance throughout the Olympic Cycle. This will also ensure India fields a seven-member contingent in Paris which is the joint highest with Rio 2016.

Ashwini will become the third badminton player from India to qualify for the three Olympics (2012, 2016, 2024). The other two are PV Sindhu (2016, 2020, 2024) and Saina Nehwal (2008, 2012, 2016).

The first-round defeats of compatriots Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, as well as Chinese Taipei pairs Hsu Ya Ching/Lin Wang Ching and Lee Chia Hsin/Teng Chun Hsun at the Badminton Asia Championships 2024 ensured Ashwini-Tanisha’s qualification for Paris. South African duo Amy Ackerman/Deidre Laurens failing to enter the top 50 of BWF rankings also helped Tan-Ash.

They will end the qualification cycle with 51960 points. Ashwini-Tanisha have won three titles in the Olympic cycle — Guwahati Masters Super 100, Abu Dhabi Masters Super 100 and Nantes International Challenge. They also finished runners-up in the Syed Modi Super 300 and Odisha Open Super 100 and had semi-final finishes at the Indonesia Masters Super 500. They also reached the quarterfinals of Malaysia Open Super 1000 and Spain Masters Super 300.
