China Masters 2025: Satwik-Chirag reaches semi-finals; PV Sindhu crashes out

Satwik-Chirag made it to their seventh semi-final of the season at China Masters 2025.

India’s top men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty kept the country’s title hopes alive at the China Masters 2025, storming into the semis on Friday. Meanwhile, India’s women’s singles campaign came to an end as PV Sindhu bowed out in the quarter-finals.

Satwik and Chirag reached their seventh and third consecutive semi-final of the season with a smooth win over Chinese duo of Ren Xiang Yu and Xie Haonan in the Shenzhen Arena.

The Indian duo looked sharp from the start, taking the opening game 21-14 in just 18 minutes. The second game saw some resistance from the Chinese pair, who leveled it at 7-7, but Satwik and Chirag quickly repeated the magic.

They closed out the game with the same 21-14 scoreline, sealing straight-games victory in only 38 minutes.

Satwik-Chirag, fresh from their runner-up run at 2025 Hong Kong Open that saw them jump from World No. 9 to WR-7, are eyeing their second consecutive final of the season.

The Indians had reached the finals of the China Masters in 2023 as well but lost to the Chinese pair of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, the same opponents who defeated SatChi in Hong Kong last week.

Meanwhile, for the two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, it was another heartbreak as she lost the women’s singles quarter-finals to world No.1 and reigning Olympic champion An Se Young of South Korea.

Sindhu struggled to find rhythm in the first game, trailing 1-6 early and going down 14-21, despite some sharp cross-court shots.

In the second game, An Se Young’s smashes gave her an 11-5 lead at the interval. Sindhu fought back to 11-14 but couldn’t stop the Korean’s charge, losing the match 14-21, 13-21 in straight sets.

With Sindhu’s exit, Satwik and Chirag remain India’s only hope at the BWF Super 750 tournament. The duo had ended their long wait for a final appearance last week makring their first summit clash since the Thailand Open in May 2024. And, they are in strong form.

Earlier in the tournament, Lakshya Sen exited in the round of 16, while the mixed doubles pair Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila also bowed out in the same round.
