Singapore Open 2024: Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand suffers defeat as India's campaign ends

They became the first Indian women’s doubles pair to reach the semifinals of Super 750 and Super 1000 semifinals.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand’s dream of reaching their first BWF Super 750 final came to an end as they suffered a defeat against the Japanese pair of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida in the semifinals of the Singapore Open 2024 on Saturday. The Indian duo, ranked 30th worldwide, lost 21-23, 11-21.

Earlier, the pair stunned World No. 2 Baek Ha Na/Lee So Hee in the last 16 before seeing off World No. 6 Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong in the quarterfinals on Friday. However, they fell short of recording a hat-trick of wins against the Top 10 pairs going down against the WR-4 Japanese duo.

Treesa and Gayatri put up a fantastic fight in the opening game, pulling back from a slow start to push the Japanese pair to the brink.

The match started with the Japanese duo taking control, racing to a 6-2 lead as they capitalized on their precise drop shots, leaving the Indians searching for answers.

However, the Indian pair refused to give in and mounted a mini comeback, reducing the deficit to 9-11 at the break.

Treesa’s powerful smashes to the body and cross-court, combined with Gayatri’s effective net play, helped them disrupt the Japanese pair’s rhythm and force errors.

The opening game remained closely contested, with both pairs trading points. Treesa and Gayatri showed their resilience by saving two game points, leveling the score at 20-20. However, Shida’s exceptional defensive skills and Matsuyama’s attacking prowess proved crucial, as they clinched the first game 23-21.

The Japanese pair dominated the second game from the start, targeting Gayatri and forcing a series of errors from the Indians, who trailed 2-11 at the interval. Despite their efforts, Treesa and Gayatri couldn’t withstand the relentless assault and rapid pace of Matsuyama and Shida. Gayatri’s game deteriorated, and the Japanese capitalized, winning 21-11 to secure their spot in the final.
