Lakshya Sen will look to strengthen his position for Paris Olympics.

The BWF Swiss Open 2024, a pivotal event in the badminton calendar, is set to unfold at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland. As part of the BWF World Tour, this tournament not only boasts a rich history dating back to 1955 but also serves as a crucial battleground for athletes vying for the Paris Olympics.

The Swiss Open marks a critical phase in the Olympic qualification process, with the BWF’s Race to Paris (RTP) rankings list playing a decisive role in determining the contenders. For singles, 35 spots are up for grabs, with a top 16 RTP ranking required for two athletes from the same nation to qualify.

India’s HS Prannoy has already secured his place, allowing him to prioritize recovery. Lakshya Sen, currently 15th in the RTP, must maintain his form to stay in contention, while Kidambi Srikanth, at 26th, faces an uphill battle.

PV Sindhu, ranked 13th, is likely to sail through to Paris, but she seeks to continue her resurgence with a strong showing in Basel. The draw presents challenges, with potential matchups against formidable opponents like Aya Ohori and Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

India’s top men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be absent from Basel, while women’s doubles see a tight race for Olympic qualification. Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa are contenders, starting strong against Indonesian opponents. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand face American opposition, with challenging matches ahead. Mixed doubles lack Indian presence, diminishing Olympic hopes for the category.
