The Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 will be hosted in Chengdu, China, from April 27 to May 5. The Indian men’s badminton team will enter the 33rd edition of the Thomas Cup as defending champions.
The 2022 Thomas Cup triumph is considered one of the greatest achievements for Indian shuttlers. Starting the tournament as the least favorite, the Indian men’s badminton squad put up a historic performance and clinched the maiden Thomas Cup title.
HS Prannoy’s gallant performance, beating Rasmus Gamke in the semis, Kidambi Srikanth’s famous win in the final against Jonathan Christie, and the Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty’s sensational display allowed the team to win the gold medal.
With 14 titles, Indonesia are the most successful team in the Thomas Cup. China hold the second position with 10 titles, while Malaysia are in the third spot with five titles.
India has named a strong squad for the upcoming BWF Thomas Cup and Uber Cup 2024. A 10-member team comprises five singles players, including HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Kiran Jeroge, and Priyanshu Rajawat.
Hosts China are considered a favourite in Thomas Cup Group A. China can rely on world number two Shi Yuqi and world number six Li Shifeng for another title. Fourth-seeded Japan lead Group B, hoping to give a memorable send-off to their star player and former world number 1 Kento Momota as he will be appearing in his last international tournament. The Japanese shuttler will hang his boots from international badminton after the end of the Thomas Cup.
Defending champions India are placed in Group C with third-seeded Indonesia. Jonathan Christie and Anthony Ginting would look to extend the title count for their team. Also, Kunlavut Vitidsarn will represent Thailand at this BWF event and will be in the fray of titles.
On the other hand, India has never reached the finals of the Uber Cup. The upcoming tournament will miss the services of two-time Olympic champion PV Sindhu, Ashwini Ponappa, and Tanisha Crasto.
However, Anmol Kharb will lead the women’s team, hoping to secure their maiden title this year. The Indian women’s team won the recently concluded Badminton Asia Team Championship 2024, defeating Thailand to win the first-ever title. Korea are the defending champion of the Uber Cup.
China, Korea, Japan, and Thailand are the top four-seeded teams in the Uber Cup 2024. Olympic champion Chen Yufei (China), world champion An se-young (Korea), and former world number one Akane Yamaguchi will be the center attraction in the BWF tournament.
Notably, except for the defending champions and the hosts, the other teams qualified for the tournament through their performances or the world rankings. Sixteen qualified teams have been divided into four groups. The top two teams per group will qualify for the quarterfinals.
For the knockout rounds, each team will play the best of five matches. That means whoever wins three games emerges as the winner.
