The competition will commence from September 17.
The seventh edition of FIBA U-16 Asian Championship 2023 is scheduled to be held from September 17 to 24 at the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Hall in Doha, Qatar. The tournament was inaugurated in 2009 and is held biennially. The age group competition will serve as the qualifier for the FIBA U-17 World Cup 2024 in Turkey with the top four countries qualifying from the tournament.
China is the most successful nation having won the championships thrice in six editions followed by Australia (2) and South Korea (1). The Indian basketball team has participated in every edition of the championships with the best performance coming in the last edition – finishing at the credible 5th position. The current young FIBA U-18 3*3 World Cup stars Kushal Singh, Lokendra and Harsh Dagar were part of the competition.
The young Cagers defeated South Korea (90-80) to finish a credible fifth before losing to Japan (84-91) in the quarterfinals. Young colts also defeated Iran in the qualification matches. Meanwhile India qualified for the regional championships after winning the SABA U-16 qualifiers. On the way to clinching the title, India defeated Maldives (group stage) and Sri Lanka (group stage and final).
