Indian chess players who have beaten Magnus Carlsen
Four Indians have got the better of Norwegian so far.
Magnus Carlsen, a chess grandmaster from Norway, is currently the world champion. He earned the title of grandmaster at the age of 13 and is known for his positional style of play as well as his ability to play with a diverse range of openings. Carlsen has won five World Chess Championships in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2021.
Despite his great repertoire of moves, some players have managed to find a way to defeat Carlsen. Here is a list of Indian chess players who have defeated Magnus Carlsen:
Viswanathan Anand
Although Vishwanathan Anand relinquished his world championship title to Carlsen in 2013, he has a good record against the Norwegian Grandmaster. Anand won against the current world champion on many occasions. He first got the better of Carlsen at the Morelia-Linares Chess event in 2007 and then at the Grenkeleasing event final in 2008. More recently, Anand won at the 2017 World Rapid Chess Championship in Riyadh and the classical section of the Norway Chess Championship in 2022.
Pentala Harikrishna
Pentala Harikrishna defeated Carlsen in 2020 during an online match at the St Louis Rapid and Blitz online Chess event. It was quite a feat for the Indian Grandmaster to beat Carlsen, who was already an experienced player and current world champion. The win against Carlsen took place in round three of the tournament while playing white.
