The Indian athletics contingent has been in great form at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, with several historic firsts being made in both athletics and para-athletics events.
Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh has become the latest Indian athlete to etch his name into the history books with his double medal-winning performance at the Glasgow Games.

Gulveer scripted CWG history on Saturday by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the men’s 5000m event. The 28-year-old reigning Asian champion finished third with a time of 13 minutes and 24.95 seconds, winning bronze.
It was a dramatic end to his journey in Glasgow, as he edged Kenya’s Cornelius Kemboi by just 0.04 seconds in a bid to secure a historic podium finish for India. Kenya’s Mathew Kipsang won the gold with a time of 13:23.61 seconds, while Australia’s Ky Robinson clinched the silver with a time of 13:24.70 seconds.

Historic double for Gulveer Singh
Before the men’s 5000m event on Saturday, Gulveer already had one medal in his bag at the Glasgow Games, winning silver in the men’s 10,000m event on July 28. The Indian runner finished second, clocking 27 minutes and 49.78 seconds.
The gold medal went to Ky Robinson, who clocked 27:48.93 seconds. Isle of Man’s David Mullarkey won bronze with 27:50.28 seconds. This made him the first Indian athlete to win medals in two track and field events in a single Commonwealth Games edition.
Despite this achievement, Gulveer admitted that he was not satisfied, having missed out on a maiden CWG gold medal.
“I’m happy because I’ve won medals, but I’m not satisfied. I wanted to hear my country’s national anthem. That’s what I was aiming for,” he told Nnis Sports. “Now let’s see what destiny has planned at the next major championships.”
“People say every athlete has a hunger. Mine hasn’t gone away and I don’t want it to. We don’t stop at this level. We have to keep climbing and win bigger medals.”
