India’s athletics campaign had a rocky start at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, on Monday. Star sprinter Gurindervir Singh suffered an early exit from the tournament after failing to secure qualification for the men’s 100m semi-finals.
The 25-year-old national record holder was the lone Indian representative in the men’s 100m Heat 4. He finished 28th overall in the heats with a time of 10.39 seconds.
Despite entering the tournament as one of India’s strongest medal hopes, Gurindervir’s elimination is a big setback for the athletics contingent. India have invested heavily in athletics, with star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and others leading the medal charge.

So far, all four of India’s medals at the Glasgow Games have come from weightlifting and para powerlifting. Jhandu Kumar bagged the first medal with a bronze in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting.
On Day 3, weightlifters Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi bagged silvers in the men’s 60 kg and 65 kg events, respectively. The legendary Mirabai Chanu then made history by bagging gold in the women’s 48 kg event, which marked her third consecutive CWG gold.

Why did Gurindervir Singh fail to qualify?
Day 4 saw a drizzle at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow. In such conditions, Gurindervir clocked 10.39 seconds and finished second in his heat. It was a rather disappointing effort from the Indian sprinter, who also seemed to decelerate a bit before reaching the finish line.
Since only the top 17 runners qualified for the semi-finals, Gurindervir, who finished 28th overall, did not make the cut-off.
His effort was 0.30 seconds slower than his personal best and national record of 10.09 seconds, which he registered at the National Athletics Federation Cup in Ranchi in May. The Patiala native failed to reproduce this performance on his CWG debut in Glasgow.
Despite his early exit, Gurindervir remains one of the country’s most exciting up-and-coming sprinters. He won two gold medals at the Asian U18 Championships 2017 in Bangkok. He won a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian U20 Championships in Gizu, and a silver medal at the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu.
Following Gurindervir’s exit, other Indian athletes will compete for the top prizes at the CWG 2026. Tejas Shirse secured a place in the men’s 110m final by finishing third in his heat, clocking 13.76 seconds.
