India's Rishikanta Singh wins silver in men's 60kg weightlifting event at Commonwealth Games 2026

India won their second medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 with Rishikanta Singh securing a silver in the menâs 60kg weightlifting event.
The Indian weightlifter entered the Glasgow Games as one of the favourites, and he lived up to the tag with a brilliant performance. His competition with Malaysiaâs Aniq Kasdan turned out to be one of the best moments of the tournament so far.
Both produced a battle of the highest quality at SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. It was a field of 11, but these two familiar foes stole the limelight during the competition. The event started slowly, with the Snatch being the first event and lifters choosing weights around 100.
The tension increased with the likes of Sri Lankaâs Supun Dilhara Somathilaka Sinhala Wiriduwalage and Kenyaâs Joshua Amunga Mboya coming closer to 110. The 21-year-old Kenyan almost missed his first lift as he was late, yet he completed it successfully with two seconds left.

Rishikanta Singh creates CWG record in Snatch
Most lifters struggled in the Snatch event, but it seemed like a cakewalk for the top two medal winners. The Indian started with a lift of 116 kg and had a slight stumble towards the back before lifting it successfully.
Kasdan matched it off with a confident lift. The lifter from Manipur increased it to 119 kg, and his Malaysian counterpart had no issues in equalling it.
Subsequently, Rishikant Singh set a Commonwealth Games record by lifting 121 kg, and Kasdan was also poised to match it to tie for the top spot at the end of the snatch.
The second event, the clean and jerk, saw only 10 lifters, with Reinataake Takenteiti of Kiribati withdrawing in the previous event. It also saw a moment of concern as Nauruâs Johannes Adam suffered a knee injury during the first lift.
The competition for the third spot was firmly between Wiriduwalage and Mboya. The Kenyan wasnât making any grunts, but his lifts were doing all the talking. The Sri Lankan was up for the fight as he had a lift of 144 kg, which positioned him in the third spot for a moment, but the referees reviewed it and decided it was no lift as the arm position was unequal. Mboya finally secured bronze with a total lift of 260 kg.

Rishikanta settles for silver
It was up to Rishikanta and Kasdan for the battle for gold. The Indian started with a lift of 143 kg, but Kasdan made light work of it by defeating him with a flawless lift of 145 kg. His strategy to take time before the Jerk lift helped him complete the lifts successfully.
In response, Rishikanta was unable to complete his second lift of 148 kg. Forced to increase the weight to stay in contention for the gold medal, he attempted 151 kg in his final attempt. He took a long time and made a few attempts to lift 151 kg, but he couldnât complete it, with pressure getting the better of him. As a result, he had to settle for silver with an overall lift of 264 kg.
For Aniq Kasdan, with a gold medal in his pocket, he went after the Games record in Clean and Jerk and secured it with another pristine lift of 152 kg, totalling up to 273 kg.
Both these lifters have been competing against each other in the recent past. While the Indian bettered him in the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship with a lift of 271 kg, today was the turn of the Malaysian, and he produced a perfect gold-winning performance.
Despite missing out on the gold medal, Rishikanta brought India their second medal in the tournament, following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumarâs bronze medal in the menâs heavyweight event.
India will have a chance to add to their medal tally on Day 3 of the Glasgow Games, with star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu competing in the womenâs 48 kg event later today. There are five gold medals on offer in total today, with the Indian artistic gymnastics team also challenging for a podium finish.
