Sarvesh Kushare wins historic high jump silver at Commonwealth Games 2026

This is Sarvesh’s maiden CWG medal
Indian national record holder Sarvesh Kushare clinched the silver medal in the men’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Monday and secured the biggest multi-sport medal of his career with a best clearance of 2.25m.
The 31-year-old bettered India’s previous best result in the event from the last edition, where Tejaswin Shankar won bronze in Birmingham 2022. The silver medal also underscored Sarvesh’s rise as one of India’s leading field-event athletes after a series of impressive performances over the past two seasons.
Sarvesh began the competition confidently, clearing 2.05m, 2.10m, 2.15m and 2.20m in the first attempt to stay firmly in medal contention.

He faced his biggest challenge at 2.25m, failing to clear the height in his opening two attempts before producing a successful jump on his final try to keep his hopes alive. The Indian then attempted 2.28 m, but was unable to clear the bar in three attempts.
Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford also failed at 2.28m but claimed the gold medal on countback after having cleared 2.25m on his first attempt. Scotland’s Jack Kimani delighted the home crowd by taking bronze with a best jump of 2.20m.
Sarvesh’s performance comes just weeks after he rewrote the Indian record by clearing 2.31 m at the National Inter-State Championships, becoming the first Indian high jumper to go above the 2.30 m mark.
In 2025, he also created history by finishing sixth at the World Athletics Championships, the best-ever finish by an Indian in the men’s high jump at the global event.

The Maharashtra athlete has steadily emerged as one of India’s most consistent high jumpers over the last decade.
A silver medallist at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, Sarvesh has also represented India at the Asian Games and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, receiving support under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for international exposure, training camps, and high-performance equipment.
Besides Sarvesh, India had Tejaswin Shankar and Aadarsh Ram in the field. Tejaswin withdrew after failing to clear 2.05m, seemingly conserving himself for the decathlon due to a niggling knee issue. Meanwhile, Aadarsh Ram cleared 2.10m and 2.15m before three unsuccessful attempts at 2.20m saw him finish fifth.
Sarvesh’s silver continued India’s strong start in athletics and gave the country its first medal of the Games in this discipline.
