Seema Kaliramna stood on the podium at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, and for anyone who has followed her story, it felt like more than a medal.
The 27-year-old discus thrower won bronze with a best effort of 58.65m, completing a successful comeback that started after she stepped away from the sport to become a mother.
Her competition wasn’t flawless. Seema opened with a foul, a nervy start given the stakes, before steadying herself with a 57.32m throw.

Seema’s third-round effort of 58.65m turned out to be the one that mattered, holding up as her podium throw even as two more fouls and a final unsuccessful attempt followed.
Jamaica’s Samantha Hall took gold with 61.66 m, and Canada’s Julia Tunks claimed silver at 60.67 m, so Seema’s bronze came against a strong international company.
Compatriot Nidhi Rani gave India a real shot at a second medal in the event, improving to 57.10m in her third attempt, but it wasn’t quite enough to break into the top three, resulting in yet another fourth-place finish for an Indian at the Games.
What makes Seema’s bronze stand out isn’t just the distance. She had to rebuild her fitness and confidence after childbirth, juggled training with a PhD, and returned to win gold at the 2025 National Games before reclaiming her national title.

Her husband and coach, Ravinder Kaliramna, has often pointed to her refusal to look for shortcuts as the real driver of this resurgence.
Her medal finished another productive day for India, with Lovepreet Singh’s silver medal in weightlifting arriving a few hours earlier. This pushes the country’s overall tally to 17 at the 2026 Games, with athletics alone now accounting for four medals.
