Tejaswin Shankar wins historic decathlon medal at Commonwealth Games 2026

Shankar clinched bronze medal in the event
Tejaswin Shankar has scripted history by winning a bronze medal in men’s decathlon event at Commonwealth Games 2026, making him the first Indian to medal in the event at CWG.
The 27-year-old competed in 10 events across two days, giving a commendable performance despite suffering from a knee injury.

Tejaswin, who started his career as a high jumper before transitioning into decathlon, was also a part of the men’s high jump event at the Glasgow Games. However, he eventually withdrew from the event, as he was feeling discomfort in his knee.
However, the discomfort did not affect him in his primary event. Tejaswin did not get the preferred start in the first event, 100 m. However, he gave a stellar performance in the high jump event, scoring his personal best of 7.82 m.
Tejaswin continued his momentum in the shot put and high jump, winning 673 and 944 points, respectively.

The 27-year-old later claimed 944 and 837 points in the 400m sprint and 110m hurdles. After giving an astounding performance in the long jump and scoring his personal best, he also accumulated his personal best in the discus throw event, where he got 674 points.
Pole Vault, which is considered the toughest event of the decathlon, also gave him a score of 702 as he jumped 4.30 meters. In the second-to-last event of the decathlon, the javelin throw, he threw his season-best of 53.12 m, getting 635 points.
In the last event of the decathlon, which was 1500m, he clocked a time of 4:36.19, alongside 704 points. In the final race, he finished above Olympic champion Damian Warner. With a total of 7976 points, the 27-year-old has given India their first medal in the event.
Tejaswin has also become the first Indian to win medals in two different events in Athletics in Commonwealth Games history.

He won the bronze medal in the men’s decathlon with an aggregate score of 7,976 points. He finished behind gold medalist Lindon Victor of Grenada (8,096 points) and silver medalist Damian Warner of Canada (8,036 points).
