Aakash Chopra raises concern over Rohit Sharma continuing as test captain till next WTC Final

Rohit Sharma has captained Team India in 7 games since he has been appointed as test captain.

Team India faced two consecutive crushing defeats in the World Test Championship Finals in 2021 and 2023. One came under Virat Kohli’s leadership and the other came under Rohit Sharma. After the WTC Final loss against Australia, Rohit’s future as a Test captain looks a little uncertain as talks are going around the BCCI looking for a younger option. Since Rohit was appointed full-time captain of the Indian test team, he has played only 7 Tests out of 10 India played in the last 18 months. As the reports are coming in, Rohit might again be rested for the 2-test series against West Indies. This has raised more questions on Rohit as a captain.

Former Indian opener Akash Chopra looks uncertain about Rohit playing in the WTC 2025 Final as a skipper. Aakash has said, “Rohit is a good captain, there is no doubt about that. Rohit is a good test batter, there is no doubt about that as well, but will the future remain like this only, I am not 100% certain because you have reached the final in the last two cycles but have not won even once, and age is not on his side, this is the reality”. Rohit is 36 years old and there is still 2 years before the next WTC Final. Aakash further added, “When you see the next two years, and another WTC cycle 2025, Rohit Sharma could still be playing Test if he wants to play Test cricket. Six series is a lot of time”.

Aakash Chopra has been a big fan of Rohit Sharma as a leader and rates him highly in World Cricket. Rohit has been a successful captain in the IPL and won 5 titles for Mumbai Indians while he won the Asia Cup tournament for India in 2018. According to Aakash, Rohit Sharma understands the game well. Rohit was appointed Indian test captain after the South Africa tour in 2021-22 when Virat Kohli gave up the captaincy after losing the series 1-2. Rohit was appointed the captain of all three formats during that time.
