Ashish Nehra declines India T20I coaching role - Reports

Ashish Nehra is currently the head coach of IPL franchise Gujarat Titans.

The race for the T20 World Cup 2024 has begun with the mega event, which is just 5 to 6 months away. It will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA in June. A total of 20 teams will take part in it, with England defending their title. Amid all this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is searching for India’s next head coach.

Notably, Rahul Dravid, who became the coach of India’s men’s cricket team in 2021 after the tenure of Ravi Shastri, has completed two years as head coach. Dravid‘s tenure came to an end after the conclusion of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at home. He coached India for all three formats.

Ashish Nehra not interested to become India’s Next head coach – Report

There were some reports that India will be appointing VVS Laxman as India’s next head coach for all three formats, who is currently with the team as “interim coach” for the ongoing five-match series against Australia. However, the board has approached former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra, who is also the coach of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. Under him, GT won the 2022 edition and made it to the final of the 2023 season.

But Ashish Nehra seems to have declined the proposal and is not interested in taking up the job. Hence, the BCCI is looking to Dravid to continue until the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 for another six months. Indian captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar also want Dravid to continue until the coming ICC event in June.

However, if Dravid gets six months of extension, then bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour will also continue for the next six months. But after the heartbreaking loss in the World Cup final against Australia, the former Indian Test No. 3 said that he has not had time to think about whether he will continue or not as head coach.
