India have seen a downfall ever since Gautam Gambhir has taken over as head coach of the side.
Australia hold the upper hand in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, leading the series 2-1 after their 184-run victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
India started the series on a positive note, but they’ve lost their edge as the series progressed. While the bowling has been consistent, the batting lineup has faltered in five of the seven innings.
The Indian team has often depended on individual brilliance. Jasprit Bumrah has single-handedly carried the bowling department with 30 wickets in the series, while youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy have saved the batting order multiple times in the series.
India now face a do-or-die situation. The Sydney test is a must-win for the Asian giants to retain the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A draw would keep their World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 finals hopes alive, but it would mean Australia regain the trophy for the first time since 2015.
Amid the ongoing struggles, recent reports suggest that Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has issued a strict warning to the players.
Gautam Gambhir fires warning to team ahead of the SCG test
The Indian Express has revealed in an exclusive report that Gautam Gambhir expressed his anger after India’s defeat in the Boxing Day test. The Indian coach expressed his frustration, saying, “Bahut ho gaya (Enough is enough).“
Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Virat Kohli were all dismissed playing loose shots during the game. Senior batter Kohli has fallen in the same manner in all six innings, while Pant threw away his wickets in both innings at the MCG. Despite scoring runs, Jaiswal has also struggled with lapses in concentration throughout the tour.
Gambhir reportedly said he had given the team the freedom to play their way, but from now on, anyone not following the pre-decided strategy will be shown the door.
India’s final test of the of the tour at the Sydney Cricket Ground will start on January 3.
