Mitchell Starc registered figures of 1/111 in India’s second innings in Perth.

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc has opened up about his sledging duel with young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first BGT 2024-25 test in Perth.

Jaiswal was dismissed by Starc in India’s first innings in Perth for a duck but turned it around in the second innings to slam his maiden test century on Australian soil.

Starc went through a rollercoster ride too in the first test. He had excellent figures of 2/14 in 11 overs in India’s first innings but then returned with dismal figures of 1/111 in India’s second innings.

During Jaiswal’s knock, the southpaw sledged Starc, taunting the left-arm speedster that he’s “bowling too slow.” At that time, Starc turned around and smiled as he walked to his bowling mark.

Jaiswal flicked Starc for a six off his hips and the later defended a similar delivery. The seamer then sledged him back, asking him to play the flick shot again.

Speaking ahead of the second test, Starc recalled the mini-battle with Jaiswal in the first test.

He said, “I didn’t actually hear him say ‘I bowl too slow’. I don’t say too much to people these days. I might have back in the day, but now I just sort of get on with it. He played that flick shot, and I think I bowled pretty much the same ball, and he defended it. I said, ‘Where’s the flick shot?’ and he just laughed at me. So, we left it just there.”

Jaiswal’s century and his partnership of 201 runs with KL Rahul laid the platform for Virat Kohli to hit a ton of his own. Their knocks helped India post 487 runs and set Australia a huge target of 534, chasing which the hosts were bowled out for 238.

The second test, a day-night contest in Adelaide, will start on December 6.
