Rohit Sharma has scored only 31 runs in three tests against Australia.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri opined that while Virat Kohli can still play for a few more years, time seems to have come up for captain Rohit Sharma in test cricket.

Both the batsmen continued their poor form as they were dismissed single-digit scores on day 5 of the MCG test of the BGT 2024-25. While Kohli racked up a century in Perth, Rohit has been in an atrocious form since the home season.

In his last eight test matches – against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia – Rohit has scored 164 runs at an average of 10.93! He’s managed only one score of over 30 in his last 15 innings.

The Indian captain has been awful in the three tests he’s played in Australia so far, managing only 31 runs in five innings with a highest score of 10. Rohit played in the middle-order in Adelaide and Brisbane and returned to the top in Melbourne but failed everywhere in both positions.

Kohli, meanwhile, has scored 167 runs in seven innings in this series.

Ravi Shastri speaks on potential retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

During the lunch break on day 5 at the MCG, Shastri was asked about the future of Rohit and Kohli in test cricket. The former head coach backed the 36-year-old Kohli to play a few more years but reckons Rohit, aged 37, is likely to quit test cricket after the ongoing series.

“No, I think Virat Kohli will play. Virat will play for some time, forget the way he got out today. I think he will play for 3 or 4 more years,” Shastri told Star Sports.

“As far as Rohit is concerned, it’s a call. At the top of the order, his footwork isn’t the same. He is probably, at times, a little late in meeting the ball. So it’s his call at the end of the series. But, having said, this Australian team want it badly. The captain wants it badly. The determination in his eyes was evident even when he was batting yesterday. He was not going to give it away,” he added.
