Sonam Yeshey clinched an eight-wicket haul in the third T20I against Myanmar.

Bhutan spinner Sonam Yeshey has scripted history in T20I Cricket by becoming the first bowler ever to clinch an eight-wicket haul in a match. The left-arm orthodox spinner achieved the feat in the third T20I against Myanmar on Friday, December 26.

In the encounter, which took place at Gelephu International Cricket Ground, Yeshey clinched eight wickets for just seven runs across his four-over spell. With his brilliant bowling performance, he helped Bhutan secure an easy 82-run victory.

After being asked to bat first, the hosts Bhutan piled up 127/9 in the first innings, with a half-century by Namgang Chejay.

Later, Yeshey demolished Myanmar’s batting unit with his impeccable performance, bowling them out for just 45 runs in 9.2 overs. Anand Mongar grabbed the remaining two wickets, and thus Myanmar lost their third consecutive game.

Sonam Yeshey bags best bowling figures in T20I cricket

With his eight-wicket haul, the 22-year-old spinner has registered the best bowling figures in T20I cricket, overtaking the previous record held by Malaysia’s Syazrul Idrus (7/8) against China in 2023. Bahrain’s Ali Dawood is the only other bowler to clinch a seven-wicket haul in T20I cricket.

Meanwhile, Bhutan claimed a clean sweep against Myanmar in the five-match T20I series. On Monday, December 29, the hosts won the fifth T20I by 84 runs, crushing the visitors in all five encounters.

Yeshey, with 13 scalps across five games at an average of 4.84, finished as the highest wicket-taker in the campaign. Since making his international debut in 2023, the Bhutan spinner has played 29 T20Is, clinching 33 wickets at an average of 16.88 and an economy of 5.88.
