Sam Curran returns as England announce playing XI for first T20I against South Africa

England and South Africa will clash in 1st T20I on September 10 in Cardiff.
England Cricket Team have announced their playing XI for the first T20I of the three-match series against South Africa Cricket Team. The encounter will be played on September 10 (Wednesday) at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
All-rounder Sam Curran has returned to England’s playing XI in T20Is for the opening clash against the Proteas. He last played a T20I game for England against West Indies in November 2024.
Moreover, Phil Salt, Jamie Overton and Jofra Archer have returned to the playing XI after missing England’s last T20I clash against the West Indies in June 2025. Notably, England have rested Ben Duckett for the T20I series against the Proteas.
In his absence, Phil Salt and Jos Buttler will take up the opening slot in the first T20I. Senior member Adil Rashid will lead the team’s spin attack, while Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton will take responsibility in the pace department.

Recently, England clinched a huge victory in the third ODI against South Africa by 342 runs, scripting the record for the biggest win in ODI cricket by margin of runs. The hosts piled up a mammoth total of 414/5 in the first innings and later bowled out the visitors for just 72 runs.
However, England lost the three-match series 2-1 as South Africa had won the first two games by seven wickets and five wickets respectively. After losing the ODI series, the Harry Brook-led side will aim for a comeback in the T20I series. The second and third T20Is will be played on September 12 and 14 respectively.
