MS Dhoni's men will look to improve from a dismal ninth-place finish last season.

Chennai Super Kings are one of the success stories of the IPL with four titles to their name. However last season was a nightmare for them finishing 9th and missing the playoffs for only the second time in their history. Going into the 16th season, Chennai looks more balanced on paper with some dynamic picks in the auction.

All eyes will be on their captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who is likely to don the yellow jersey for the last time in IPL. Speaking of Chennai's team as a whole, they lacked a specialist death-over bowler last season which is likely to remain a big question mark this season as well.

Chennai Super Kings have a good Indian contingent similar to last season but they lacked X-factor players in the foreign contingent which was one of the main reasons behind their failure. They have tried to rectify their problems with the big signing of Ben Stokes for a whopping 16.25 crores. MS Dhoni and his side will play seven matches at fortress Chepauk.

Full squad

MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, Subhranshu Senapati, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Dwaine Pretorius, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Mukesh Choudhary, Matheesha Pathirana, Simarjeet Singh, Prashant Solanki, Maheesh Theekshana, Ajinkya Rahane, Ben Stokes, Sheikh Rasheed, Nishant Sindhu, Kyle Jamieson, Ajay Mandal, Bhagath Varma

Foreign players are always a big factor in determining the fate of teams in the league. Here is the complete list for the 2023 season.

Devon Conway

Devon Conway was a steal for Chennai last season but they failed to utilize him to his maximum extent. He started the league on a slow note and struggle against spin, which prompted his exclusion. He came back strong in the latter part of the season and scored 252 runs in 7 innings with the highest score of 87. He is an expert in switching gears as per the team's needs and stitching partnerships.

Moeen Ali

The English all-rounder was one of the big retentions of last season for Chennai Super Kings. After his impeccable season in 2021, his performance declined last season. In the last IPL with the bat, he scored 244 runs in 10 innings and a single fifty. He took 8 wickets in 10 innings with an economy of 6.63. CSK mostly used him as a floater in the middle order or at number 3 but with the arrival of Ben Stokes, he is likely to get a definite role.

Dwaine Pretorious

Dwaine Pretorius who became the part of Chennai team last year was a surprising retention for this season. In 6 matches last year, he scored only 44 runs and picked up only 6 wickets last year. Dhoni has shown faith in him and it could be due to the slowish nature of the Chennai pitch and Pretorius' bag of slow cutters. With Dwyane Bravo's IPL retirement, Pretorius may be seen as his likely replacement.

Mitchell Santner

Mitchell Santner has been in the Chennai Super Kings setup for years but hasn't been able to consistently show up in the playing eleven. He played in 6 matches last season and scored only 22 runs and 4 wickets.

Matheesha Pathirana

Matheesha Pathirana came as a replacement last season and only played two games but his initial impact was impressive. He played in 2 games and took 2 wickets. The Sri Lankan bowler is likely to get a bigger workload this time around and will be hoping to live up to expectations in the death overs for Chennai.

Maheesh Theekshana

Maheesh Theekshana was one of the most impressive bowlers for Chennai Super Kings last season with 12 wickets in 7 matches. His mystery spin can be a defining factor for Chennai's fate but his inclusion in playing eleven may be subject to the surface of the pitch.

Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes is a big-money signing for Chennai Super Kings this season with a price tag of 16.25 Crores. He can be that X-factor for Chennai Super Kings which they were missing last season. The English all-rounder has a good record in the IPL and will be hoping to recreate the same partnership with Dhoni in lower order as in the 2017 season. Overall in IPL, Stokes has played 43 matches in which he has scored 920 runs and taken 28 wickets.

Sisanda Magala

Sisanda Magala is the last name on the list. The South African speedster was recently announced as a replacement for Kyle Jamieson, who is ruled for this season. Magala played for Sunrisers Eastern Cape and was one of the stars behind their maiden title triumph. He took 14 wickets in the tournament, including two game-changing wickets in the final. Magala can be the solution to Chennai's death over woes if he continues his SA20 form.
