Ravi Ashwin finished his international cricket career with 765 wickets.

Ravi Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket after the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 test in Brisbane, which ended in a draw due to heavy rain. The five-match series remains level at 1-1.

Attending the post-match press conference along side Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, Ashwin called time on his India career.

The Indian spinner said, “This will be my last day as Indian cricketer in all format in the international level. I do feel there is a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer but I would probably like to showcase it at the club level.

Ashwin finished his career with 537 test wickets, which makes him India’s second-highest test wicket-taker after Anil Kumble (619). In his remarkable career, he won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in limited-overs cricket and two test series in Australia.

Ashwin played a chief role in India’s historic dominance at home from 2012 to 2024, and in India’s qualification to two consecutive ICC WTC finals.

Gautam Gambhir pays tribute to Ravi Ashwin’s remarkable career

Following Ashwin’s announcement, Indian coach Gautam Gambhir took it to X (Formerly Twitter) to pay tribute to Ashwin’s illustrious career, remarking that he had seen Ashwin evolve from a young spinner into a legend.

Gambhir tweeted, “The privilege of seeing you grow from a young bowler to a legend of modern cricket is something that I wouldn’t trade for the world!

Gambhir also acknowledged Ashwin’s impact on young cricketers and emphasized that many next-generation youngsters will become bowlers due to him.

The head coach added, “I know that generations of bowlers to come will say that I became a bowler coz of Ashwin! U will be missed brother!

Meanwhile, the fourth BGT test will be played from December 26 at the MCG.
