Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan and Hong Kong in Group B of the Asia Cup 2025, losing to Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh have played all three of their Group B games in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 tournament being held in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. There were huge hopes from the Bangladesh side, led by Litton Das in the tournament, but they managed two wins and one loss.

Bangladesh started well by defeating Hong Kong in their tournament opener. Hong Kong had done well, scoring 143/7, with Nizakat Khan scoring 42 runs. Tanzim Hasan Sakib took 2/21, while Taskin Ahmed and Rishad Hossain took two wickets as well. In response, Litton Das made 59 as Bangladesh won by seven wickets.

Their next match against Sri Lanka proved to be their undoing, as Bangladesh lost the match by six wickets. Bangladesh scored 139/5 after being asked to bat first, with Jaker Ali (41*) and Shamim Hossain (42*) being the best batters. In response, Pathum Nissanka (50) and Kamil Mishara (46*) helped Sri Lanka win the game by six wickets.

In their final group game against Afghanistan, which was a must-win game for them, Bangladesh batted first and posted 154/5, with Tanzid Hasan top-scoring with 52. In response, despite 35 by Rahmanullah Gurbaz and 30 by Azmatullah Omarzai, Afghanistan made 146, falling eight runs short.

At the end of the league stage, Bangladesh have two wins in three games with a net run rate of -0.270 and are very much in contention for the Super Four stage.

For Bangladesh to proceed to the Super Four in this scenario, Afghanistan must defeat Sri Lanka by a large margin. The only way the Litton Das-led side can participate in the Super Four is if the Sri Lanka collapse or the Afghans pursue them down like lightning.

All told, Sri Lanka’s NRR has to fall below -0.270, which is a theoretical possibility but exceedingly unlikely in T20 matches. Bangladesh’s fate will be in Sri Lanka’s hand and they can only hope that they win their game against Afghanistan.
