Sri Lanka defeated England by 8 wickets in the match No. 25 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

England have been outclassed in every department by Sri Lanka at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After a heavy defeat by 8 wickets, defending champions England’s dismal performance in the batting has put them in the line of being knocked out from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Sri Lanka have also kept their dominance against England after the 1999 World Cup. England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first in Bangalore. Openers Jonny Bairstow (30) and Dawid Malan (28) had a decent opening stand of 45 runs but soon Sri Lanka gripped the game with Lahiru Kumara’s brilliant spell.

Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis used Lahiru Kumara wisely and introduced him later after the first powerplay. England's batting lineup failed miserably against the Sri Lankan pace attack. Ben Stokes was the top run-scorer in English innings with 43 runs. 6 English batters contributed only 19 runs to England’s total. Lahiru Kumara was the top performer for Sri Lanka with a spell of 3/35. Sri Lanka also had a poor start and lost two wickets early. David Willey brought Sri Lanka down by 2 wickets in 5 overs. Pathum Nissanka (77) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65) stitched a match-winning partnership for Sri Lanka.
