Shubman Gill slammed 754 runs in the five-test series against England.

Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik made a massive revelation after the end of the test series between England and India. He said that the hosts’ coach, Brendon McCullum, wanted to give the Player of the Series award to Mohammed Siraj and not Shubman Gill

Both Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj were two of the best performers for India in the test series against England. While the captain led from the front with the bat, the fast bowler gave his heart and soul for the team, playing all the games with high intensity.

Shubman Gill ended the series as the highest run-getter with 754 runs to his name across five innings. He also slammed four centuries, including a double ton, registering the most runs by an Indian batter in a test series in England.

On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj finished as the highest wicket-taker in the series. He picked 23 wickets in the five games to go with two fifers. His best came in the last game at The Oval, where he single-handedly won the match for India on day five, picking three wickets when England were 35 runs away from a win.

While Mohammed Siraj was awarded Player of the Match Award in The Oval test, Shubman Gill was named India’s Player of the Series.

But, now, Dinesh Karthik revealed that had the game gotten over on day four, then there was no doubt that Shubman Gill would have won Player of the Series Award. He revealed that Mike Atherton also prepared his questions for the same.

But when Mohammed Siraj came up with the brilliant bowling performance on day five of Oval test, Brendon McCullum changed his mind. But with questions and all being ready for Gill, they went ahead with the India captain. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he said:

If the match had gotten over yesterday (Day 4), Shubman Gill was the man of the series. Brendon McCullum had said Shubman Gill. And obviously, Atherton [Mike Atherton] was the one doing the presentation. So, he had all the questions ready. Everything was for Shubman Gill.”

“Baz McCullum turned it around in a matter of half an hour, 40 minutes — to Mohammed Siraj, He even spoke about him in the post-match with Sky Sports — about how he enjoyed watching Siraj bowl and all the eloquent things he had to say about him,” he concluded.
