Fatima Sana to lead as Pakistan announce squad for ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024
Pakistan are placed in Group A with Australia, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
Fatima Sana has been named Pakistan captain as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in UAE. Sana has replaced Nida Dar as Pakistan captain in white-ball formats.
Fatima, 22, will be captaining Pakistan for the first time in T20Is or any other ICC event. She has previously led the national team in two One-Day Internationals, including a memorable Super Over victory over New Zealand at Hagley Oval while standing in for the concussed Dar.
Aside from the captaincy change made by the national selection committee, the Pakistan team is relatively stable, with only one alteration from the squad that toured Sri Lanka for last month’s Women’s T20 Asia Cup.
The Women’s T20 World Cup will get underway in the UAE on October 3. Pakistan are in Group A with Australia, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The revised schedule for the tournament has not yet been announced after it was shifted from Bangladesh last week.
Sadia Iqbal named in the squad subject to her fitness
Sadaf Shamas, who played in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup, has taken over as wicket-keeper batter from Najiha Alvi. The 15-member squad includes ten players from the last T20 World Cup in 2023.
They include Aliya Riaz, Muneeba Ali, Nashra Sandhu, Omaima Sohail, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra Amin, Tuba Hassan, Shamas, Dar, and Fatima. Sadia, a left-arm spinner, will be selected depending on her fitness, and Tasmia Rubab, an uncapped left-arm seamer, is also in the team.
Pakistan has also named Alvi, who was left out of the main squad, as the traveling reserve. Rameen Shamim and Umm-e-Hani are the non-traveling reserves.
