'Champions, Historic': PM Narendra Modi congratulates Team India on winning ICC T20 World Cup 2024
India won the ICC T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa by seven runs in the final.
Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian cricket team on their victory over South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final on Saturday.
India and South Africa clashed at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29 in the T20 World Cup 2024 final. Both the teams had come into the summit clash undefeated. While India were under pressure to break their jinx of not winning an ICC trophy since 2013, South Africa were playing their first ICC T20 World Cup final.
India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. Rohit was dismissed after only nine runs. Though Virat Kohli anchored one end, India lost Rishabh Pant (0) and Suryakumar Yadav (3) early on.
But Kohli and Axar Patel (47 off 31) scored 72 runs for the fourth wicket. Kohli went on to smash 76 in 59 balls with six fours and two sixes, as India reached 176/7 in 20 overs. Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje took two wickets each.
In reply, Quinton de Kock (39) stood firm as South Africa lost early wickets. Tristan Stubbs (31) and Heinrich Klaasen (52) counter-attacked to put South Africa back in the game. Klaasen smashed Axar for two sixes and two fours in a 24-run 15th over.
But then Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh bowled superbly, choking the South African batters, to win the match by 7 runs. Hardik Pandya took 3/20, with Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah taking 2 wickets each.
Virat Kohli was named the Player of the Final and he announced his T20I retirement. Jasprit Bumrah was given the Player of the Tournament award.
