Punjab Kings issue clarification on buying 'Shashank Singh' in the IPL 2024 auction
Shashank Singh was bought by the Punjab Kings for INR 20 lakh at the IPL 2024 auction.
The IPL 2024 auction saw a total of 72 players get picked among the ten IPL franchises. Mitchell Starc became the costliest buy ever when the Kolkata Knight Riders signed the Australian ace pacer for a record-breaking sum of INR 24.75 crore. There were a few uncapped stars as well that went for big money. Sameer Rizvi was the most expensive uncapped Indian player at the event.
The Chennai Super Kings bought the 20-year-old for a price of INR 8.4 crore. Shahrukh Khan (7.4 crore), Kumar Kushagra (7.2 crore), and Shubham Dubey (5.8 crore) were among the other uncapped Indian players that fetched huge money. However, there was one uncapped player who was bought by the PBKS. He is Chhattisgarh all-rounder Shashank Singh, who made the headlines for different reasons.
Punjab Kings end clarify after buying wrong ‘Shashank Singh’ in IPL 2024 auction
Shashank Singh is a 32-year-old all-rounder from Chattisgarh who was registered with a base price of INR 20 lakh. The uncapped all-rounder ended up with the PBKS at his base price. However, after he was bought at the auction, PBKS co-owners Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia were seen having a chat with the auctioneer, Malika Sagar. And as soon as the discussion got over, some speculation sparked that the franchise had signed the wrong Shashank Singh.
Some news confirmed that the franchise was not looking to buy him, but because he was sold, they would have to settle with him. However, now the franchise has issued a statement clarifying that Shashank was on their list, but the whole confusion arose because of two players with the same name.
PBKS in a media release stated, “Media have reported on Shashank Singh being bought erroneously by the Punjab Kings. The Kings would like to clarify that the player was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him on board and see him contribute to our success.”
The 32-year-old made his IPL debut for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022 against CSK. He has played 10 IPL games so far. Overall, he has played 55 T20 matches, scored 724 runs, and taken 15 wickets.
