Rohit Sharma was very clear on how to run the team, said former India coach Rahul Dravid.
Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has heaped praise on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Before Gautam Gambhir, Dravid was the head coach of Indian Cricket Team, with Rohit being the skipper across all three formats.
Between 2022 to 2024, the Rahul-Rohit pair tasted immense success with the team. India won Asia Cup 2023, reached the final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, and won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with Rohit as captain and Dravid as coach. After winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, Sharma announced his retirement from the shortest format, while Dravid ended his role as India’s head coach.
Sharma helped India to win the much-awaited ICC title during T20 World Cup 2024. Moreover, he also led the team to another ICC title by winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year. Sharma, who retired from test cricket in May, is only active in ODIs now.

I always felt he deeply cared about the team: Rahul Dravid on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy
While speaking on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel, Dravid said that Sharma deeply cared about the team as captain. He also noted that Sharma was very clear about how he wanted to run the team since the first day.
“I always felt he deeply cared about the team. Right from the first day, he was very clear about how he wanted to run the team and what was important to him. I thought he was very clear in what he wanted from the team, how he wanted the environment to be, and how he wanted the atmosphere to be. I think his experience helped him set these things,” he said.
“For me, it was just working with him, challenging him at times on certain things, but also working with him to ensure that he was able to be comfortable in that space. Once he was comfortable in that space, I knew he was going to perform and get everyone else to perform,” Dravid added.
Furthermore, Dravid also lauded how Rohit maintained his calmness during his captaincy.
“Also, one of the things with him is he was very calm, he connected really with the team, and didn’t go up and down too much. At least, he never gave me that impression. He maintained that balance and calmness,” he said.
Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma is expected to be seen next during India’s white-ball tour of Australia in October-November, where they will play three ODIs and as many T20Is.
Meanwhile, after Rohit’s retirement, Suryakumar Yadav was named as the new T20I skipper, while Shubman Gill was appointed as the new test captain.
