Pat Cummins and Shreyas Iyer were the standout captains in the IPL 2024.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 came to a conclusion on Sunday night in Chennai with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) winning their third IPL trophy. The Shreyas Iyer-led side hammered Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final at Chepuak to clinch the IPL 2024 trophy.
The tournament saw some captains step up for their teams as a player and a leader, while some others failed to deliver as not only skippers but also as individuals. Pat Cummins and Shreyas Iyer were easily the two stand-out captains of the season, while the likes of Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul were disappointing.
In this article, we will be rating the 10 captains based on their individual performances.
Rating performances of all captains in IPL 2024
Pat Cummins – 9/10
Leading in the IPL for the first time, Cummins earned huge plaudits from all corners for taking a franchise to the IPL 2024 final that had finished at the bottom of the points table last year. Cummins was also impressive with the ball, taking 18 wickets in the season, including some match-changing spells in the middle overs. As a leader, he empowered the SRH batters to tear up the batting records in the IPL 2024.
Shreyas Iyer – 9/10
Helped by the mentorship of two-time IPL-winning skipper Gautam Gambhir, Shreyas Iyer marched KKR to the franchise’s third IPL trophy. Iyer had a strong group at his disposal and he used them superbly. With the bat, he played an aggressive brand of cricket, scoring 351 runs at a strike rate of 146.
Sanju Samson – 8/10
For the first two-thirds of the league stage, it looked like Rajasthan Royals (RR) would finish at top of the points table after they had secured eight wins in nine games. However, their season fell off after that and they scraped into the playoffs in the third spot. After winning the Eliminator, RR were outdone by SRH in Qualifier 2.
RR captain Sanju Samson had a terrific season with the bat, scoring 531 runs. He walked the talk once again about playing “impactful” cricket, as evident in his strike rate of 153.
Ruturaj Gaikwad – 8/10
Even though Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to qualify for the playoffs, Gaikwad had a terrific season with the bat. The new CSK captain amassed 583 runs with the help of a century and four fifties. CSK lost out on a playoff spot on net run rate. Despite being under the pressure of replacing MS Dhoni, Gaikwad was impressive as CSK’s captain.
Rishabh Pant – 7/10
Despite missing out on the action for more than a year, Pant made a phenomenal return to cricket. He started his IPL 2024 campaign with some struggles, but in the second half of the tournament, he was back to his lofty standards. The Delhi Capitals (DC) captain scored 446 runs at a strike rate of 155 and earned his place in India’s T20 World Cup squad.
Faf du Plessis – 7/10
This may have been the last season for Faf du Plessis as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain, but the South African left a huge impression by commanding RCB’s sensational turnaround in the second half of the competition.
With the bat, he was a key figure in RCB’s revival. Faf scored 438 runs at a strike rate of 161, including a Man of the Match performance in the must-win game against CSK.
Shubman Gill – 6/10
Captaining for the first time in his IPL career, Shubman Gill had a decent season as a batsman but not so much as Gujarat Titans’ (GT) skipper, although it must be noted that the team was without Hardik Pandya, who left the franchise, and Mohammed Shami, and Rashid Khan was returning from a back injury.
Gill scored 426 runs at a healthy strike rate of 147, notching up one century and two fifties.
KL Rahul – 5/10
The issues with KL Rahul’s batting in T20 cricket remain the same: runs come from his bat, but not at the rate his team needs them. Rahul scored 520 runs this season, but his strike rate of 136 was well below the standard for openers in the IPL 2024 season, which was a high-scoring tournament. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) missed out on the playoffs for the first time in their three-season history.
Sam Curran – 5/10
Since Sam Curran led Punjab Kings (PBKS) in more matches than regular captain Shikhar Dhawan, who played only five games in IPL 2024, we have considered the Englishman for this piece. PBKS managed five wins in the season and finished in the ninth spot.
Curran won a couple of games with his all-round performances but was ordinary in other matches. He scored 270 runs at a strike rate of 123 and snapped 16 wickets.
Hardik Pandya – 4/10
The new Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya was unarguably the most disappointing captain and big-name player of the IPL 2024 season, especially given that he marched Gujarat to an IPL trophy and a runners-up position in the last two seasons.
MI finished at bottom of the points table. A number of decisions made by Hardik as a skipper were questionable, the biggest of them all was not giving Jasprit Bumrah the first over in several matches. As a player, Hardik scored 216 runs at an average of 18 and picked up 11 wickets.
