WI vs IND: Rohit Sharma confirms Yashasvi Jaiswal will open innings in 1st Test match

Yashasvi Jaiswal will make his test debut in the first Test against West Indies.
Team India will lock horns with the West Indies on Wednesday in the first of the two test series. This game will take place at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica, at 7:30 p.m. Indian time. There was huge talk when the test squad was announced, as it saw veteran Cheteshwar Pujara getting dropped and Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad getting their respective maiden test call-ups.
Thus, it will be interesting to see who will replace Pujara in the playing XI and be the new No. 3. Will it be Jaiswal or Gaikwad? However, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has revealed the name of the player who will play at No. 3 in the first test against the West Indies. This will be the first assignment for the Test team after their loss in the final of the World Test Championship against Australia at the Oval.
"We have been looking for a left-hander for many years"- Rohit Sharma on Yashasvi Jaiswal as opener
On the eve of the first test, Rohit Sharma confirmed in the press conference that Yashasvi Jaiswal would make his debut in the first test. He also said that the 21-year-old will open the inning alongside him, and Shubman Gill will bat at No. 3. Notably, the left-hander was one of the standby players for the Indian team in the WTC final against Australia but didn't get to play. However, after a stellar performance in the IPL 2023 for the Rajasthan Royals, Jaiswal impressed everyone and earned a place in the team.
The Indian skipper confirmed his batting position and also said that India had been looking for an opener for a long time. Rohit said, "(Shubman) Gill will play at No. 3 because he also wants to play at No. 3. It’s good for us also because it allows us to have a left-right combination (in the opening). Hopefully, this works for us in the long term. We were desperate for a long time for a left-hander (opener), so let’s hope he (Yashasvi Jaiswal) performs well for the team and makes the spot his own."
The left-hander scored 625 runs in 14 innings in the IPL 2023. He smashed one century and also scored the fastest IPL fifty off just 13 balls. Furthermore, the Indian captain also confirmed that India would go with two spinners and three pacers. He said that after looking at the pitch, the management has decided to bring in Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja together.
