Rohit Sharma expressed his dissatisfaction with this rule.

The Impact Player Rule, which was introduced in the IPL last season, has brought about a revolutionary change in cricket strategy. Teams have the flexibility to adjust their lineup during the game by substituting a batter or bowler whenever necessary. Teams strategically employ this rule to smoothly transition from batting to bowling.

As an example, they can choose to bench bowlers while batting, giving them the opportunity to include an extra batter in their lineup. On the flip side, they can enhance their attack by swapping out one batter for another bowler when bowling. It has made the game more convenient for the teams.

The new Impact Player regulation has had a significant negative impact on the game as well. It has led to changes in how all-rounders are being developed. Teams often opt to play with an extra batter when they are batting and while they are bowling, they substitute that one batter for a premier bowler. Due to this, all-rounders do not have a platform to develop their skills. It has also greatly impacted the growth of new all-rounders. It will surely hurt the Indian cricket team’s prospects in the long run.

Rohit Sharma gives Dube and Sundar example to criticise Impact Player Rule

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India and a recent guest on the “Club Prairie Fire” podcast, expressed his disagreement with the Impact Player regulation. During an interaction with Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist, Sharma expressed his concerns. He mentioned how the regulation hinders all-rounders such as Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube from getting sufficient bowling time in the IPL.

Due to in-game substitutions they end up on the bench during bowling and are not getting enough match practice. This will certainly affect India, especially with the T20 World Cup 2024 around the corner, as international cricket does not allow any impact players.

“I am not a big fan of Impact sub rule. It is going to hold all-rounders back, eventually cricket is played by 11 players not 12 players. You are taking out so much from the game to make it entertaining for people around. If you look just from the cricketing aspect of it, I feel guys like Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar aren’t getting to bowl, which for us is not a good thing,” said Rohit.
